2023 Hana 1Q K League 1 Round 26 Preview

league 2023.08.10   I   조회수 1758

The 2023 Hana 1Q K League 1 season reaches Round 26 this weekend and with just seven rounds to go until Final A and B, there is plenty still to be decided. Can Pohang Steelers gain a firmer grasp on second place when they take on a Gwangju FC side that's chasing a place in the top six? Will Suwon FC be able to build on their Suwon Derby win and drag Jeju United into the relegation battle when the two meet this weekend? And can Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors' new striker Bak Jae-yong make it two goals in two matches when the Green Warriors host Suwon Bluewings?

Match of the Round

Pohang Steelers (2nd) vs Gwangju FC (5th) - Sun. 13th August, 20:00

Two of the league's most in-form teams, Pohang Steelers and Gwangju FC, lock horns this Sunday to close out the Round 26 action. Pohang welcome Gwangju to the Steelyard on the back of a four-match unbeaten run with two wins and two draws. Last time out, centre back Ha Chang-rae struck late to salvage a draw away to FC Seoul - much like how he had done in the Steelers previous trip to the capital. Gwangju, meanwhile, put Daejeon Hana Citizen to the sword in a 3-0 home win thanks to goals from Kim Han-gil, Jeong Ho-yeon, and Lee Kun-hee. The win keeps the Griffins in fifth place and just a point behind FC Seoul in fourth, a potential AFC Champions League spot. Perhaps more importantly, the gap between newly-promoted Gwangju and the relegation playoff spots is now 14 points.

A win at the Steelyard, though, could move Lee Jung-hyo's men up to fourth. But Gwangju have only beaten Pohang away once and Pohang have lost at home just twice this season. Gwangju are fourth in the division for touches in the penalty area, ahead of Pohang. They are top for dribbles and fifth for dribble success rate and third for possession, lending some indication as to how Lee Jung-hyo's team likes to play. What skews things a bit, though, is the fact that Gwangju are top for shots from outside the box. Pohang, too, are a possession-based team and sit just behind Gwangju in that regard - 53.7% to Gwangju's 54.7%. They are a tad more direct, though, having dispatched the joint-most number of shots with 312 and are fifth for accuracy with 37.5%. Pohang are head and shoulders above the rest of the division for headed shots and, like Gwangju, score highly for shots from outside the area.

The two teams have met twice already this season with Gwangju winning the most recent encounter 4-2 at home and Pohang winning the last meeting at the Steelyard by a scoreline of 2-0. In total, there have been 24 previous meetings with Pohang winning 16, Gwangju two, and six draws.

Team of the Round

Suwon FC (vs. Jeju United, Sat. 12th August - 20:00)

A Suwon Derby win on Saturday over crosstown rivals Suwon Bluewings keeps Suwon FC in 10th place. It also ended a run of eight matches without victory to ease the pressure on Kim Do-kyun and his team. Another positive was a goal from Lee Seung-woo, his second in four matches and enough to earn him the round MVP award. Now, with Jeju United on a run of 10 without a win, the gap with the Islanders just above them in the table is just down to eight points and as luck would have it, it is Jeju United who Suwon FC face next. Suwon will be looking to their attack to help steer them out of trouble. Suwon have dispatched the most shots in the division with 312, joint with Pohang, and the second-most from outside the box with 149. Suwon will be looking to exact revenge, too, as the most recent meeting with Jeju ended in a 5-0 home loss.

Player of the Round

Bak Jae-yong, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (vs. Suwon Bluewings, Sat. 12th August - 19:00)

The 23-year-old striker Bak Jae-yong has only been at Jeonbuk for a matter of weeks but already, with just one appearance for the Green Warriors, is off the mark. Bak's first goal for his new club came on Sunday in the 2-0 home win over Incheon United. With 15 minutes on the clock, Bak, in a waterlogged penalty box, received the ball with his right foot, took a touch and then found the bottom corner. Bak has been in fine form this season for FC Anyang, scoring six goals in 14 starts and 18 appearances overall. He was in the second tier's top 10 for goals and top four for xG at 6.25. Bak was sixth in K League 2 for touches in the box with 61 and 10th for shooting accuracy with 45.71% of all attempts finding the target. Up next for Bak and Jeonbuk is the visit of Suwon Samsung Bluewings, a side he faced last year for FC Anyang in the promotion-relegation playoffs.

Elsewhere in K League 1 Round 26

Meanwhile, on Saturday it's bottom versus top as Gangwon FC take on Ulsan Hyundai. Gangwon came close to earning a first win in 15 matches last time out with Park Sang-hyeok's 83rd-minute strike seemingly enough to beat Jeju United. That was until Reis levelled from the spot seven minutes later. The stalemate keeps Gangwon bottom of the table. Ulsan also drew last time out, 0-0 away to Daegu, and so will be looking to return to winning ways and preserve or even better their 12-point lead.

On Sunday, Daejeon Hana Citizen host FC Seoul on the back of a moral-denting 3-0 loss to Gwangju FC. This has left the Purples outside the top six but a second home win over Seoul this season could move them with a point of top six rivals Daegu. Seoul drew last time out and last won four matches ago and so An Ik-soo's men will be looking to get their AFC Champions League qualification push back on track.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Incheon United will be seeking a return to winning ways when they take on a Daegu FC side that's without a win in four. Incheon had been on a run of three straight wins but suffered defeat to Jeonbuk last time out. A win over Daegu, though, could move them up a place in the table. Daegu remain in the top six but only just with Daejeon only one point behind. Three points will be seen as a must, then, by manager Choi Won-kwon.
