A scintillating second-half display from Team K League almost resulted in an upset over Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the 2024 Coupang Play Series at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Team K League trailed 3-0 at the break following a brace from Son Heung-min and an early Dejan Kulusevski strike, but a quickfire double in the second half from FC Seoul striker Stanislav Iljutcenko moved the home side to within a goal of their English counterparts.

Tottenham restored their two-goal cushion through Will Lankshear on 67 minutes but a stunning volley from Obderdan on 81 minutes from all of 25 yards made it 4-3 to spark another fightback.

But the match, which saw 45 shots at goal between the two teams, including 18 on target, ended 4-3 to Tottenham.

Team K League manager Park Tae-ha started with teenage prodigies Yang Min-hyuk and Yoon Do-young on the flanks with Lee Seung-woo and Joo Min-kyu through the centre in a 4-2-3-1. Jeong Ho-young and Lee Dong-gyeong anchored the midfield, sitting in front of a back four of Choi Jun, Park Seung-wook, Park Jin-seop, and Lee Myung-jae.

For Tottenham, Son Heung-min started on the left side of a three in a 4-3-3, alongside Dejan Kulsevski, and Brennan Johnson.

Tottenham broke the deadlock through Dejan Kulsevski, latching onto a rebound from Son Heung-min's initial shot.

Then, in the 38th minute came the moment much of the 66,000 in attendance had waited for - a goal from South Korean national team captain Son Heung-min scoring. Son drifted in front the left, and moved the ball towards the edge of the 18-yard line before curling into the top corner to make it 2-0.

On the stroke of half time, Son made it 3-0. A lovely one-two with Kulusevski saw Son bearing down on Jo Hyeon-woo before slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Park Tae-ha then made 11 changes for the second half.

It didn't take long for Team K League to get back in the game.

Following a devastating counterattack, with Anderson the architect, his quick change of direction left Oliver Skipp on the floor before sending the ball over to Jeong Jae-hee on the opposite flank with the outside of his right foot.

Jeong opted to shoot but Spurs substitute goalkeeper Brandon Austin spilled the ball and Iljutcenko was there to poke home the rebound.

Relief for the FC Seoul striker who had had a goal chalked off for offside just a few moments before.

Another goal came just two minutes late to make 3-2 Iljutcenko again and Jeong Jae-hee again, this time a perfect ball into the six-yard box where the big centre forward does not miss. Anderson played in Cesinha who then threaded the ball into Jeong Jae-hee whose low cross was met with a diving header.

It was now a race to a hat-trick with Stanislav Iljutcenko and Son Heung-min but then Son went off. That didn't stop Spurs from finding a fourth goal though; Will Lankshear from close range on 67 minutes following a ball across from Timo Werner.

The goal of the night came nine minutes from time with Oberdan who let rip with a volley 25 yards out after Spurs goalkeeper Brandon Austin had punched clear Cesinha's corner from the right.

Speaking after the game, the score of Team K League's first two goals Stanislav Iljutcenko said:

"I feel very happy, of course. It's a special moment, it's my living room, our home stadium (it) was very nice to play there.

"We was playing as a team, we were representing the K League. I think overall everyone did a great job. For me, personally, it was a pleasure to play with all these amazing players. I think everyone did their best to represent K League, Korea and all their clubs. I think overall it was a great game for us all together."

Manager Park Tae-ha: "It was a difficult game in hot weather. We wanted to perform well but Tottenham's performance in the first half was worthy of their reputation.

"In the second half, foreign players playing in the K League showed their competitiveness. We didn't win but it was an interesting result. I think it will have left an impression on the fans.
