The penultimate matchday of the 2024 Hana Bank K League 1 season could prove key for the teams in Final B. Survival or relegation could be confirmed for some, while others will be looking to pull away from the bottom three.
Final B Match of the Round
Incheon United (12th) vs. Daejeon Hana Citizen (9th) - Sun. 10th November, 16:30
Incheon United's final home game of the season is the visit of Daejeon Hana Citizen this Sunday afternoon. Depending on the result of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors versus Daegu FC, defeat to Daejeon could spell relegation for Incheon as Choi Young-geun's men are two points adrift of Jeonbuk with 11 goals fewer. The permutations are near limitless but, ultimately, a draw or a win for Jeonbuk coupled with a defeat for Incheon would essentially mean the unthinkable for the ship that seemed unsinkable. For Daejeon, meanwhile, a win could seal safety with a game to spare, with the Purples sitting two points above the relegation zone.
Both teams drew 0-0 last time out, for Incheon it was away to Jeonbuk to make it one win, one draw, and one loss in Final B. Daejeon's stalemate was away to Gwangju FC, extending the Purples' unbeaten run in Final B with zero goals conceded in the process. Daejeon haven't won away to Incheon since March 2013 but were able to pick up the three points when the team met in August, courtesy of a late goal by Vladislavs Gutkovskis. Daejeon will be looking to make the most of their impressive shooting accuracy, sitting fourth in K League 1 in that regard at 37.6%.
Incheon, meanwhile, will be looking to make the most of their time on the ball, sitting first in K League 1 for passes per minute of possession (14.8). Incheon attacker Gerso Fernandes is second in K League 1 for touches in the box with 108, while Stefan Mugosa, who leads the golden boot race with 15 goals, is second for total shots (88), and third for headed shots (24). Daejeon's Masatoshi Ishida, who has four goals and three assists in 13 appearances since returning in the summer, is 10th for touches in the box per 90 minutes with four and has an xG per 90 of a goal every other game.
Final B Team of the Round
Jeju United (vs. Gwangju FC, Sun. 10th November - 16:30)
The first team in Final B to secure absolute safety is Jeju United, doing so courtesy of a 2-2 draw away to Daegu FC last time out. A brace from Kim Ju-gong off the bench, with goals on 53 and 89 minutes, which twice brought the Tangerines level, meant that Kim Hak-bum's men sit eight points clear of the bottom three with two games to go. In the away draw with Daegu, Jeju landed 60% of their shots on target (6 from 10), had six positional attacks with shots, dispatched shots in two of their attempted counterattacks, showed 75% accuracy in progressive passes, and, at the other end of the field, won 64% of their defensive duels. What's left to do now is secure top spot in Final B and continue the unbeaten run which now stands at three matches. Sitting seventh and three points above their opponents this Sunday, Gwangju FC, a win would secure the highest possible Final B finish for Jeju. Back on the island, Jeju's home form has been very important for them, winning 11 of their 18 home matches this term. Interestingly, six of those wins came via the same 1-0 scoreline.
Final B Player of the Round
Lucas Barcelos, Daegu FC (vs. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Sun. 10th November - 16:30)
With Daegu FC living legend and talisman Cesinha out injured, so too summer recruit Italo Carvalho, attacking responsibility has fallen at the feet of Lucas Barcelos. The Brazilian was named in the starting lineup against Jeju United on Sunday, his first start since returning from injury, and only his eighth of the campaign. He repaid his manager's faith by slotting home a tidy finish just before the break, latching on to a perfectly weighted through ball by Kyohei Yoshino before guiding the ball past the on-rushing An Chan-gi with a deft touch. Barcelos also made two key passes, connected two of his three attempted crosses, showed 44% success with his one-on-one dribbles, and made four progressive runs. The goal and all-round performance will have given Barcelos a timely confidence boost heading into this weekend's crunch clash against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Barcelos scored against Jeonbuk last in a 3-1 away win at the tail-end of September.
