2021 K League 1 Top Threes: Defending

league 2021.12.15   I   조회수 1214

Where your team plays out from the back or spends large spells under the cosh and trying to snuff out danger, having a solid backline is key in any league. This next instalment of Top Threes takes a look at some key defensive actions.

Successful Tackles

There's no use getting stuck in if you're not going to win the ball. Luckily, Suwon Samsung Bluewings have more than one player who knows how to win a tackle. Defensive midfielder Choi Sung-geun made the most successful tackles in K League 1 last season with 36 from 21 games (1.9 per 90 minutes). Up behind Choi was his Bluewings colleague Jang Ho-ik who made 33 successful tackles in 34 games, giving him a record of around one per 90 minutes. On the other side of the city, Kwak Yun-ho of Suwon FC was third with 32 from 25 games (1.3 per 90). An honourable mention for FC Seoul's Lee Tae-seok though who sneaks into the top three on successful tackles per 90 with 1.3 (19 from 24 games).

Interceptions

As the old adage goals, prevention is better than cure so if you can cut out the danger before even needing to make a tackle then you're halfway there. FC Seoul's Osmar made the most interceptions in K League 1 in 2021 with 164 from 35 appearances (4.7 per 90). Up behind the Spaniard was Pohang's Kwon Wan-kyu with 117 from 37 matches (3.2 per 90) and K League 1 MVP for 2021 Hong Jeong-ho with 100 from 36 matches (2.8 per 90 minutes).

Blocks

If you can't win the ball or even intercept it then there's still another chance to prevent a goal from being scored. Blocks. Getting your body on the line or simply sticking shutting your eyes and sticking out a boot. However it's done, Osmar scores well in this regard too with 249 blocks made from 35 games (7.1 per 90), followed by Kwon Wan-kyu get again with 219 from 37 matches (5.9 per 90). Jang Ho-ik is amongst it too, making 200 blocks in his 34 appearances for the Bluewings this season (5.9 per 90).
