league 2022.03.14   I   조회수 1107

The first midweek K League 2 action of the 2022 season sees Gwangju FC host Seoul E-Land in a clash between two promotion contenders, Jeonnam Dragons take on league leaders Bucheon FC 1995 after picking up a first win of the new season, while Gimpo FC's Son Seok-yong will be looking to make it four for the season when the K League new boys take on a Chungnam Asan side yet to find a win so far this season.

Match of the Round

Gwangju FC (6th) vs Seoul E-Land (4th), Wed. 16th March - 19:30

One of the stand-out matches of Round 5 is Gwangju FC versus Seoul E-Land, two teams that are aiming for promotion this season. Gwangju began the new season with a defeat to Gimpo FC but since then have picked up back-to-back 2-0 wins in the league - first against Daejeon Hana Citizen and then against Ansan Greeners at the weekend. Experienced full-back Lee Eu-ddeum laid on two assists in that one which equals his total from the whole of last season. As a team, Gwangju are fourth in the league for shots despatched but drop down to fifth in terms of accuracy. Former Leopard Lee Kun-hee (pictured above) is the Yellow with the most shots to his name this term with eight, four of which have found the target.

Seoul E-Land, meanwhile, fought back from two goals down on Saturday to earn a draw away to Gimpo FC on Saturday. Lee Sung-yoon halved the deficit on 76 minutes to make it 2-1 before Mauricio Asenjo levelled nine minutes from time with his first goal in K League. It meant that the Leopards remain unbeaten with two wins and a draw from their first three matches. The Leopards are second for shots made this season and second for how many have hit the target. Yoo Jeong-hwan is Seoul E-Land's sharpest shooter with 11 shots so far this term.

Wednesday's meeting will be the first between the two clubs since 2019. That season, the Yellows picked up four wins from four, conceded just two and scored 10. In fact, Seoul E-Land are yet to beat Gwangju from eight meetings in total since the first back in 2018.

Team of the Round

Jeonnam Dragons (vs. Bucheon FC 1995, Wed. 16th March - 19:00)

At the fourth attempt, Jeonnam Dragons are up and running for the season and have registered their first victory of 2022. It came in a come-from-behind win over Gyeongnam FC on Sunday and as Jang Seong-jae restored parity on 16 minutes after Jeong Choong-geun had made it 1-0 to the Reds inside four minutes. The game's winner came less than 15 minutes later via Nikoloz Kacharava with the Georgia international finding his first goal in K League. Jeonnam, then, have been quite frugal in attack with just two goals scored in total and are ninth for shots made, eighth for shots on target but sit third for successful dribbles. This Wednesday the Dragons take on league leaders Bucheon FC 1995, the only K League 2 team to remain unbeaten thus far. Last term Bucheon had the edge over the two teams with two wins to Jeonnam's one and one draw.

Player of the Round

Son Seok-yong, Gimpo FC

Son Seok-yong is etching his name in Gimpo FC history. Not only did Son score in Gimpo's first-ever K League match and first win at K League level. The 23-year-old also scored in Gimpo's first-ever K League match at their home stadium. Son now has three goals from four appearances this season and is among the division's early golden boot contenders. Son scored eight in the whole of last year in K3 as Gimpo FC went on to win the title and is on course for a career-best in front of goal in what is his first at K League level. Son's xG is actually 0.76, has a 50% shooting accuracy rate, and has a 56% success rate for dribbles. On Tuesday Gimpo FC take on Chungnam Asan, a side that is yet to score this season.

Elsewhere in K League 2 Round 5

Daejeon Hana Citizen and Ansan Greeners get the midweek action underway in a game that sees two teams yet to win this season meet at Purple Arena. Daejeon head into the match on the back of two straight 1-1 draws while the Green Wolves lost 2-0 at home to Gwangju FC at the weekend, their third straight defeat.

Meanwhile, Busan IPark and FC Anyang will be looking to get back to winning ways when the two sides meet at the Asiad this Wednesday. Anyang conceded a late equaliser to Daejeon last time out while Busan were on the receiving end of a late winner from Bucheon FC 1995 and are still without a win this season with two defeats and two draws. There was no shortage of goals when these two teams met last season - 18 in fact, including nine in one match.
