2022 Hana 1Q K League 2 Round 24 Preview

league 2022.06.30   I   조회수 886

There was no movement in the table following the last round of matches, as Gwangju continue to lead the division by an eight-point margin despite being humbled by Gyeongnam FC last time out. There are some interesting matches on the slate this coming weekend with the latest instalment of the Line 4 Derby between Ansan Greeners and FC Anyang, while third takes on second when Bucheon FC 1995 host Daejeon Hana Citizen on Saturday night. Elsewhere, Jeonnam Dragons are currently mired in a slump, having gone winless in their past seven matches. With Leonard Pllana still out, could Park In-hyeok be the man to reverse their fortunes when they take on Seoul E-Land?

Match of the Round

Ansan Greeners (10th) vs FC Anyang (4th) - Sat. 2nd July, 18:00

After consecutive victories against Bucheon FC 1995 and Seoul E-Land, matches in which they scored three goals apiece, the Green Wolves were brought back down to earth last weekend when they were defeated 3-1 by Chungnam Asan, with Kim Kyung-soo scoring a consolation goal in the first minute of second-half injury time. Statistically, it was an even match almost everywhere except for on the scoreline, as the Owls took their chances more clinically to record their eighth win of the season.

Anyang recorded a minimal 1-0 victory over Seoul E-Land, with Jonathan Moya scoring the lone goal of the encounter in the 69th minute, for his eighth goal of the season. That made it back-to-back wins for the Violets following a stretch that saw them win just three times in nine matches. They are now level on points with Bucheon FC 1995 and just four points off second in the table as several of the frontrunners failed to make up ground in the standings after Gwangju's loss last weekend. A derby win would do them good as they have matches against the top two in the near future. Should they continue to put together results, momentum could be an important factor as the summer progresses.

This will be a tricky one to call as FC Anyang have recorded nine wins to Ansan's seven in the current era of the rivalry, with five matches ending in draws. Anyang have taken four out of a possible six points thus far this season, but Ansan won three of four meetings last year. Both teams need to win for very different reasons, as such, another tightly contested clash is to be expected.

Team of the Round

Daejeon Hana Citizen (vs. Bucheon FC 1995) - Sat. 2nd July, 18:00

The Purples head into the weekend winless in their last four matches after a 1-0 loss to Chungnam Asan in the Chungcheong Derby on June 13th, and three consecutive draws against FC Anyang, Gwangju FC, and Gimpo Citizen. They dominated proceedings last time out, at least in terms of possession but only managed to place four of twenty-one attempts on target. Masatoshi Ishida, who started the year well, has cooled off considerably recently and needs to turn his form around in a big way if Daejeon are going to mount a serious challenge for top spot in the division.

The addition of Willyan from Gyeongnam FC produced immediate dividends as he scored his new side's only goal in the match last weekend. He was brought in to score goals, and the sooner he is able to adapt to his new teammates, the better, as it will likely help them to secure better results and put them in position to challenge for a title. The current gap between first and second is not insurmountable but they have to start putting wins together in order to cut the deficit. That can start this weekend when they face a team hot on their heels and looking to stay relevant in the playoff picture.

Player of the Round

Park In-hyeok, Jeonnam Dragons (vs. Seoul E-Land) - Sun. 3rd July, 20:00

Things have been extremely difficult for Jeonnam Dragons since returning from continental duty in the Asian Champions League, as they have managed just one league win since the beginning of May, a span of ten matches. If they still have any ambition of climbing into the top half of the table and potentially challenging for the playoffs, that has to start now. The loss of Leonard Pllana to an adductor injury has greatly affected results and offensive output, so other players must step in to fill the void.

One such player is Park In-hyeok. He has played regularly this season and will have to contribute more offensively if the team is to turn their fortunes around in the coming months. With two goals in his past five matches, he looks ready to become more of a factor in his first season with his new club, after arriving from Daejeon Hana Citizen in the off-season. He has the talent to affect matches and needs to play a leading role if the Dragons are going to move up the standings. The next two months will likely determine where Jeonnam will finish the season - if they want to change the narrative, it needs to happen sooner rather than later, and this weekend would be a good time to put the wheels in motion, with Park a key factor in any future resurgence.

Elsewhere in K League 2 Round 24

Gwangju FC look to bounce back from their worst showing of the season when they travel to face Gimpo FC, who did them a favor last weekend when they took points from Daejeon Hana Citizen. Both teams have won against each other this season, by identical 2-1 scores, with the new outfit winning in their first-ever K League 2 match on opening weekend thanks to goals from Son Seok-yong and Kim Jong-seok. Eom Ji-sung struck from the penalty spot and Lee Euddeum scored what turned out to be the winner in the Yellows' win in early May.

Chungnam Asan and Busan IPark also meet this weekend, with both teams having something to play for. It will be the third time for the sides to play each other in 2022, with the Owls winning the first match by a slim 1-0 margin. The Royals were much more convincing the last time they met, walking off as 3-1 winners. Asan are looking to make up ground in the playoff race, while Busan are hoping to get out of the league basement with a win and will be looking for FC Anyang to come away with three points in their derby match this round.
