A K League-strong defensive unit helped South Korea onto a 0-0 draw on Thursday against Uruguay in the Taegeuk Warriors' first game of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Four K League players started for South Korea, including 75% of the back four with Kim Jin-su at left back, Kim Moon-hwan on the right, and Kim Young-gwon in the centre of defence.

FC Seoul's Na Sang-ho got the nod to start on the wing.

Jeonbuk's Cho Gue-sung came off the bench in the second half in place of Hwang Ui-jo to make it five K League players. Cho, like Kim Moon-hwan and Kim Jin-su, was making his World Cup debut.

South Korea were set up on more of a 4-3-3 for the first 74 minutes with Na Sang-ho and Son Heung-min flanking Hwang Ui-jo. This then changed to a 4-1-4-1 or the last 15 minutes or so plus stoppage time.

Ulsan's Kim Young-gwon won 75% of his aerial duels, showed a passing accuracy of 85%, made four clearances, and three interceptions.

Ar right back, Kim Moon-hwan showed 89% passing accuracy, 100% accuracy for his long passes, 67% accuracy for crosses, made six interceptions, made one key pass, successfully landed two out of his three crosses, and made four clearances.

Over at left back, Kim Jin-su won 50% of his defensive duels, 100% of his offensive duels, and made one interception.

Na Sang-ho began the match at right wing in the absence of Hwang Hee-chan and made one key pass, and was 100% successful with his passes into the penalty area.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors striker Cho Gue-sung made a 24-minute cameo off the bench in the second half, managed to dispatch one shot, showed 75% passing accuracy, made one progressive run, had one touch in the box, and won around a third of his aerial duels.

Up next for South Korea is Ghana on Monday 28th November with a 10 PM KST kickoff time.
