2022 K League 1 Review: Winger Top Threes

league 2022.12.16   I   조회수 671

Up next in our 2022 K League 1 Review Top Threes are the wingers. The role of the winger has changed over the years as football has evolved. Gone, it seems, are the days of the traditional 4-4-2; instead, wingers are more like wide forwards that play more centrally.

Assists

A winger will be judged mostly on the number of assists they provide. This bodes well for Gangwon's Kim Dae-won who is the most generous of wingers having teed up his teammates 13 times in 2022. Behind him was Jeju United's Gerso Fernandes with seven to sit joint-fourth overall, and Modou Barrow of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors who recorded six.

1. Kim Dae-won, Gangwon FC - 13 (2nd overall)
2. Gerso Fernandes, Jeju United - 7 (Joint 4th overall)
3. Modou Barrow, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors - 6 (9th overall)

Goals

But wingers are also expected to have healthy goal records. Luckily, Daegu's Go Jae-hyeon has exactly that. As well as being his club's top scorer in 2022, Daegu's Go Jae-hyeon was the top-scoring winger or wide forward in the division with 13. He sits level with Modou Barrow of Jeonbuk and one goal ahead of Kim Dae-won with 12.

1. Go Jae-hyeon, Daegu FC - 13 (Joint 5th overall)
2. Modou Barrow, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors - 13 (Joint 5th overall
3. Kim Dae-won, Gangwon FC - 12 (8th overall)

Combined goals and assists

"Attack points", goal contributions, or simply combined goals and assists - which wingers rank the highest? Well, Kim Dae-won with an incredible 25, followed by Modou Barrow with 19, and Um Won-sang with 18.

1. Kim Dae-won, Gangwon FC - 25 (1st overall)
2. Modou Barrow, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors - 19 (4th overall)
3. Um Won-sang, Ulsan Hyundai - 18 (5th overall)

Shots on target

To score goals you have to get shots on target. Gerso Fernandes was the most accurate shooter who managed to land 30 shots on target in K League 1 last year. Behind him are Um Won-sang at 26 and Go Jae-hyeon at 25.

1. Gerso Fernandes, Jeju United - 30 (Joint 7th overall)
2. Um Won-sang, Ulsan Hyundai - 26 (13th overall)
3. Go Jae-hyeon, Daegu FC - 25 (14th overall)

Key passes

Looking at the construction side of the game again, a key pass would be the last pass before a shot. If the player shooting scores then this would be an assist. Sometimes the provider does all they can, it is after all no fault of their own if their teammate can't hit the target. Kim Dae-won sits to for key passes in the division let alone among the wingers with 78, Na Sang-ho is second with 39, and Um Won-sang is third with 33

1. Kim Dae-won, Gangwon FC - 78 (1st overall)
2. Na Sang-ho, FC Seoul - 39 (7th overall)
3. Um Won-sang, 33 (Joint 13th overall)

Deep completions

A deep completion is what's regarded as a key pass in or close to the penalty area. Ulsan's Um Won-sang made the most of these among the wingers in 2022 with 40, followed by Gerso Fernandes of Jeju United with 39 and FC Seoul captain Na Sang-ho with 38.

1. Um Won-sang, Ulsan Hyundai - 40 (10th overall)
2. Gerso Fernandes, Jeju United - 39 (12th overall)
3. Na Sang-ho, FC Seoul - 38 (14th overall)

Crosses

A winger needs to be able to cross the ball and chances are if you get enough of them into the mixer there's a good chance some of them will be accurate. Gerso despatched the most crosses among the K League 1 wingers in 2022 with 96, followed by Na Sang-ho with 91, and Pohang Steelers' Jeong Jae-hee with 87.

1. Gerso Fernandes, Jeju United - 96 (5th overall)
2. Na Sang-ho, FC Seoul - 91 (8th overall)
3. Jeong Jae-hee, Pohang Steelers - 87 (10th overall)

Crossing accuracy

The more accurate the cross, the more likely the strikers are going to be able to put those chances away. Pohang Steelers' Lim Sang-hyub proved to be the most accurate crosser among the wingers with 39.36%, Kim Dae-won of Gangwon FC showed 37.68% accuracy, and Na Sang-ho was third at 37.36%. What's interesting is that wingers are ranked lower down compared to players in other positions. Wingers are now seen as wide forwards and full backs tend to provide the width and crosses.

1. Lim Samg-hyub, Pohang Steelers - 39.36% (14th overall)
2. Kim Dae-won, Gangwon FC - 37.68% (21st overall)
3. Na Sang-ho, FC Seoul - 37.36% (24th overall)

Dribbles

The traditional winger can dribble. A long ball forward can move you up the pitch but that creates a 50-50 situation and could lead to you losing possession. Dribbling the ball can sometimes be less of a risk. Gerso attempted the most dribbles among the wingers in K League 1 last season 200, second overall, with Na Sang-ho next with 153 and Gangwon's Yang Hyun-jun third with 144.

1. Gerso Fernandes, Jeju United - 200 (2nd overall)
2. Na Sang-ho, FC Seoul - 153 (3rd overall)
3. Yang Hyun-jun, Gangwon FC - 144 (4th overall)

Successful dribbles

It helps, of course, of the winger can beat their opponent (or opponents, plural). Pohang Steelers' Lee Kwang-hyeok ranked first in this regard among the wingers with 64.44% of all dribbles being successful ones, behind him is Gerso Fernandes at 60.05%, and Ulsan Hyundai's Um Won-sang with 59.754%.

1. Lee Kwang-hyeok, Pohang Steelers - 64.44% (4th overall)
2. Gerso Fernandes, Jeju United - 60.05% (8th overall)
3. Um Won-sang, Ulsan Hyundai - 59.74% (11th overall)
