league 2023.06.01   I   조회수 451

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors take on Ulsan Hyundai this Saturday as the 2023 Hana 1Q K League 1 campaign reaches Round 16. Jeonbuk know that a win would take them into the top half while Ulsan know that three points will, at the very least, maintain the 11-point lead at the top of the table.

Overview & Match Information

The top two teams in each and every K League 1 season over the last four seasons, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Ulsan Hyundai Motors, meet this Saturday in what will be seen as a hugely important game, not just for the two teams but for the whole league. Jeonbuk are 20 points behind Ulsan currently and so a title push might be a little farfetched but a win against the current champions would at least open the title race up for the chasing pack. Ulsan are 11 points clear at the top of the table but have FC Seoul, Jeju United, and Pohang Steelers all locked on 27 points and looking to mount a mid-season push for the K League summit. Jeonbuk are three points outside the top six but a win by two goals or more over Ulsan would take them into the top half.

Recent Form

Hosts Jeonbuk had been on a run of four unbeaten but lost 1-0 to Pohang Steelers last time out. It was caretaker manager Kim Do-heon's first defeat since taking the reins from Kim Sang-sik at the start of May. Jeonbuk picked up wins over the two Suwon clubs either side of draws with FC Seoul and Incheon United.

Ulsan survived a bit of a scare last time out, salvaging a 3-3 draw at home to Daejeon Hana Citizen after finding themselves 3-1 down at one stage. A brace from Joo Min-kyu meant the Horangi were able to avoid a second defeat to Daejeon this term. Said loss is the only reverse Ulsan have suffered this season and have since gone on to win six of their eight league games with two draws.

Head-to-Head

The two teams met on the opening day of the season, the now-traditional curtain-raiser between the league champions and FA Cup winners. Ulsan emerged as the victors 2-1 thanks to goals from Um Won-sang and Gustav Ludwigson after Song Min-kyu had given Jeonbuk the lead.

Over the last 10 meetings, Ulsan have managed four wins to Jeonbuk's three and three draws. Ulsan have outscored Jeonbuk slightly during that time, too, with 13 goals to 12. The all-time record reads played 109, 40 wins for Jeonbuk and Ulsan, and 29 draws.

Last term, the two giants of K League met five times - four in the league and one in the FA Cup. Ulsan won two, Jeonbuk two, and one draw.

What to Watch

How Jeonbuk contain Ulsan's powerful forward line

The league's joint-top scorer Joo Min-kyu bagged two last time out thanks, in part, to clever link-up play with Martin Adam who had played a lovely little ball around the corner to Joo to bury. Which powerful striker Hong Myung-bo picks to lead the line will be something to keep an eye on. Joo has featured 14 times, starting 10 matches while Martin Adam started five matches from 11 overall appearances. It has been one of the other and it has been very rare for the two to be on the pitch at the same time. Just two occasions, in fact, and one of those - the 3-3 draw with Daejeon - Joo played as a number 10 between minutes 67 and 97 while Martin Adam lead the line in a 4-2-3-1.  Of course, behind the main striker, Ulsan have the likes of Gustav Ludwigson (six goals, two assists), Vako Qazaishvili (five goals), and Um Won-sang (two goals, two assists).

At the heart of Jeonbuk's defense is towering defender Jeong Tae-wook who will, most likely, be tasked with keeping Ulsan's striker quiet at set pieces. Under Kim Do-heon, Jeonbuk have been set up in a back four and the former West Bromwich Albion midfielder has used just three different centre back pairings and Jeong has been the one constant. At 71.43%, Jeong has the best defensive duel success rate among all Jeonbuk centre backs, 14th overall in K League 1. The former Jeju and Daegu man sits second, though, when it comes to aerial duel success at 70.59%. But, in front of their own fans, Jeonbuk won't be looking to just defend for the whole 90 minutes. Three players share the title of being the club's top scorer this term; Paik Seung-ho, Moon Seon-min, and Song Min-kyu. Moon is the team's most accurate shooter with 52.94% of all efforts finding the target.
