2023 Hana 1Q K League 1 Round 17 Preview

league 2023.06.05   I   조회수 636

With summer right around the corner, competition is heating up in the 2023 Hana 1Q K League 1 season. Round 17 will take us past the halfway mark of the regular portion of the campaign, and also allow for a temperature check to be taken on many of the teams. The likes of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, who face off against a similarly in-form Daegu FC, will have their sights set on nestling into the top-half, while sides such as Gangwon FC and Suwon Samsung Bluewings are in great need of a victory to boost their respective chances of survival.

Match of the Round

Pohang Steelers (4th) vs Jeju United (2nd) - Tues. 6th June, 18:00

Tuesday sees two teams vying for AFC Champions League qualification go head-to-head when second-place Jeju United travel to the Steelyard. Hosts Pohang Steelers, who currently sit in fourth, come into proceedings on the back of a 4-2 loss to Gwangju FC though, their first defeat since they last played their upcoming opponents back in early May.

Still, just one point separates these two teams in the table, meaning Pohang have the chance to leapfrog Jeju with a win. The Steelers are a much better outfit at home too, averaging 2.13 points per game on their own turf, compared to 1.25 PPG away. Nevertheless, Jeju are unbeaten in eight league matches and have dropped points just once in their last six on the road.

Recent history favours the visitors in this fixture. Not only did Jeju run out 2-1 victors in the aforementioned May fixture, but they have lost only two of their last 17 encounters with Pohang. As such, Nam Ki-il will have plenty of confidence his men can again be on the winning side on Tuesday, thus extending the Islanders' stay in second place.

Team of the Round

Incheon United (vs. FC Seoul, Wed. 7th June - 19:30)

After three consecutive draws, Incheon United returned to winning ways with a strong 3-1 away victory against Daejeon Hana Citizen. Now four unbeaten, Jo Sung-hwan will hope his team's steady improvements in form can soon bear fruit in the form of moving up the rankings, given they're now just four points away from the top six.

For this to happen, though, Incheon will need to show they can win at home, something they haven't done in nearly three months. But it does feel like a platform for better results is there, given United have the league's fourth-highest xG (22.95), and also the third-lowest xGA (18). This Wednesday, they face an FC Seoul side hitting relatively patchy form, yet still within touching distance of second place.

Player of the Round

Kim Dae-won, Gangwon FC (vs. Daejeon Hana Citizen, Wed. 7th June - 19:30)

On Saturday, Kim Dae-won officially ended Gangwon FC's run of five consecutive league matches without scoring courtesy of a smartly taken first-time finish from Han Kook-young's decisive pass across the box. It was the 26-year-old's first K League 1 goal of the campaign too, something fans will be hoping can inspire the Bears' "ace" to use as a catalyst to return to the kind of form that spearheaded the provincial club into the top half last year.

The next challenge for Kim Dae-won and co. comes in the form of Daejeon Hana Citizen, who brushed Gangwon aside 2-0 in the season's opening round. But the Purples aren't quite firing in the same way they initially were, with their current defensive vulnerabilities (they have conceded 10 times in their last four league games) playing a large part in the team only managing one win out of their last seven matches.

Elsewhere in K League 1 Round 17

When Suwon FC host Ulsan Hyundai, it's a tale of the league's worst defence going up against the best attack. The home side have conceded a sizeable 30 goals across their opening 16 games, whereas their midweek opposition has scored 32. League leaders Ulsan emerged 3-0 victors when these two sides met in March, and their current average of two goals scored per game has to worry Suwon manager Kim Do-kyun, who has only overseen one clean sheet in his team's last nine matches.

On Wednesday, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs. Daegu FC sees a battle between two teams on the rise. Both have three wins out of their last five (though only Daegu are unbeaten in this period), with the home side coming into Wednesday's fixture on the back of a euphoric win against Ulsan. Perhaps then, good times could be on the horizon again for Jeonbuk.

Finally, the somewhat resurgent Gwangju FC will be full of confidence when they face off against bottom-placed Suwon Samsung Bluewings. The visitors are looking improved themselves, however, despite their run of three consecutive losses. For Gwangju, the key here will be taking the lead first, as they have only dropped points twice when ahead this season.
