No fewer than 13 K League-based players have been called up to Paulo Bento's South Korean National Team squad for the crucial World Cup qualifiers. South Korea sit top of their group but qualification to the next round is far from sewn up. While there are some returns, such as Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors' right back Lee Yong, there are a handful of K League players in a Taeguk Warriors squad for the first time such as Suwon Bluewings duo Lee Ki-je and Jung Sang-bin.

South Korean National Team

Reaching the half-way point in the FIFA World Cup qualification Asian section, South Korea sit top of the group on goal difference ahead of Lebanon. Paulo Bento's men are unbeaten and take on Turkmenistan in the first match of these rescheduled Group H fixtures this coming Saturday. The last meeting between the two teams back in October 2019 ended in a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Na Sang-ho and Jung Woo-young. Head-to-head record is three matches played, three wins for Korea. A win at Goyang Stadium would give the Taeguk Warriors some much momentum after suffering a heavy loss to rivals Japan in their last match.

There are four uncapped K League-based players in the squad, Kim Young-bin (Gangwon FC), Lee Ki-je, Jung Sang-bin (Suwon Bluewings), Song Min-kyu and Kang Sang-woo (Pohang Steelers). The most capped K Leaguer is Lee Yong with 45 caps to his name.

Fixtures

Canada

Doneil Henry (Suwon Samsung Bluewings)

Canada are also in action this weekend and have called up Suwon Bluewings centre back Doneil Henry. Henry has made 31 caps for his country, scoring once but will be hoping to make a first appearance in a red shirt since 16th November 2019, a Concacaf Nations League match against the United States. The match ended 4-1 to the US, but Canada had done two unbeaten before that with two wins over Cuba, 1-0 and 6-0.

But the next two fixtures will be in Concacaf World Cup qualifying. Canada sit joint top of Group B along with Suriname after two wins from two. A 5-1 win over Bermuda and an 11-0 win over the Cayman Islands means that Canada have a plus 15 goals difference. First up is a first ever meeting with Aruba away from home on June 6th followed by a crucial match against Suriname at home on June 9th.

Fixtures

Aruba (WCQ) (a) - 6th June
Suriname (WCQ) (h) - 9th June
