Part two of K League Olympians featuring the midfielders and forward, all profiled by the writers of K League United.

Midfielders

14. Kim Dong-hyun (Gangwon FC)

Kim Dong-hyun has managed to be a bright spark in a midfield for Gangwon FC and has made 13 league starts this season - only three players have made more in the side. Generally more defensive minded, the central midfielder has offered energy and security in a more organised Kim Byung-soo system during the past few months. In the Olympics team, there’s no reason why Kim Dong-hyun can’t continue his reliable form.

21. Kim Jin-kyu (Busan IPark)

A late addition to the squad after initially being left off the 18-man roster, Kim Jin-kyu is more than worthy of a place in this team. The versatile 24 year-old has come on leaps and bounds this season, impressing in both deep-lying and attacking midfield roles for Busan, who he has captained in the absence of veteran Park Jong-woo. Composed and direct on the ball, Kim has the ability to dictate play and spot a killer pass. He has also noticeably toughened up after missing much of last season through injury, and he could prove to be the key link between defensive midfielder Won Du-jae and Kim Hak-bum’s flock of talented forwards.

15. Won Du-jae (Ulsan Hyundai)

Very few Korean football followers knew the name ‘Won Du-jae’ before his arrival at Ulsan from then-J2 League side Avispa Fukuoka in early 2020. But in a remarkable first season on the peninsula, the defensive midfielder was crowned tournament MVP at the U23 Asian Cup, lifted the AFC Champions League trophy and made his debut for the senior national team. Won’s rise to domestic and continental fame has been nothing short of remarkable; and now with his intelligence, calmness in possession and killer long pass, Won is set to shine on the international stage at the Olympic

10. Lee Dong-gyeong (Ulsan Hyundai)

An attacking midfielder with a penchant for the spectacular, Lee quickly made a name for himself, scoring memorable goals for both club and country in 2019. Like Seol Young-woo, Lee is a product of the Ulsan Hyundai youth system and is well-known for his versatility and technical ability. At 23, Lee has already made four appearances for Paulo Bento’s senior squad and scored his first international goal in the recent 2022 World Cup Qualifier win over Sri Lanka.

6. Jeong Seung-won (Daegu FC)

Versatile midfielder Jeong Seung-won has been a big asset for Daegu FC usually playing as wingback on the right side. He can also play as winger or central midfielder and is known for his work rate and crossing ability. He has featured 13 times for Daegu this term, last year 26 times and producing seven assists - the most at Daegu.

- Jung Muyeol

7. Kwon Chang-hoon (Suwon Samsung Bluewings)

After five years in Europe, attacking midfielder Kwon Chang-hoon returned to K League and to Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Kwon is one of three wild cards (players over the age of 24) along with former Seongnam forward Hwang Ui-jo and Kim Min-jae, formerly of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Kwon was a firm fans' favourite at Big Bird during his first spell with the club, helping to guide them to the 2016 FA Cup triumph. Kwon can play as a central midfielder in a four or three as well as a number 10 behind the main strikers.

9. Song Min-kyu (Pohang Steelers)

Song Min-kyu is all set to be a crucial component of the Korea Republic squad at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. The 21-year-old is equally adept in playing in either on the left flank or in a central role just behind the striker. His versatility will be an asset for the team. The Pohang Steelers attacker will be coming into the tournament on the back of terrific form in the league. Song has already netted seven goals in the K League this season, and is on course to break his tally of 10 goals from last season. Last month, Song made his senior international debut in a FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Sri Lanka. Song Min-kyu will be expected to be one of the first names in the team sheet for Kim Hak-bum. The forward will be buzzing with confidence ahead of representing his nation in the quadrennial showpiece.

17. Um Won-sang (Gwangju FC)

At just 22-years-old, Um Won-sang is one of the first names on Kim Ho-young's team sheet at his home town club, Gwangju FC. Making up one part of the so-called 'Gwangtan Boys', Um netted seven goals in K League 1 last season, forcing his way into Kim Hak-bum's thinking as a direct and pacey winger. Primarily used on the right flank, Um has played all across the front-line this season. After breaking through at Gwangju FC in a title-winning 2019 side in K League 2, he featured heavily under boss Kim at the U-23 Championship at Thailand 2020.

11. Lee Dong-jun (Ulsan Hyundai)

The fourth Ulsan Hyundai player in Kim Hak-bum’s squad is lightning fast attacker Lee Dong-jun. The Busan native played 108 games for his hometown club, scoring 26 goals for IPark, before joining Hong Myung-bo’s Horangi last January. Lee is predominantly deployed as a right winger, but Ulsan have had some joy using him as a striker thanks to his remarkable speed and unparalleled work rate.
