K League Sides Shine in on Continental Stage

July saw this year's iteration of the AFC Champions League get underway with K League sides Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Daegu FC, Pohang Steelers and reigning Asian Champions Ulsan Hyundai taking part. With all four sides competing in six matches over a span of two weeks, both Ulsan and Jeonbuk progressed through their groups unbeaten, securing first place and passage to the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Daegu and Pohang put in performances that saw them progress based on being two of the three best runners up.

The Round of 16 will see Ulsan Hyundai take on J.League 1 champions Kawasaki Frontale while Daegu FC will also face Japanese outfit Nagoya Grampus on September 14th. The following day will see Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors play Thai Premier League side BG Pathum United while Pohang Steelers will take on J.League's Cerezo Osaka. It has been announced by the AFC that all four of these single-leg matches will take place in Jeonju at Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

K League Continues to Entertain

K League 1 witnessed a mid-season interval to allow for AFC Champions League group stages and also World Cup Qualifiers to be played. Returning mid-July, the country's top division has picked up right where it has left off with some exciting football and notable results to match. Incheon United have continued their fine form with three consecutive wins to extend their unbeaten run to seven while Suwon FC have also picked back up on winning ways, defeating local rivals Suwon Samsung Bluewings before defeating Asian Champions Ulsan Hyundai 5-2 in one of the most eye-catching results of the season so far.

Meanwhile, K League 2 has continued through the interval and has seen a number of teams strive for the summit over that period. Gimcheon Sangmu may well have found themselves in first by the end of July but sustained pressure from Jeonnam Dragons, Daejeon Hana Citizen and FC Anyang has ensured their lead has remained narrow. Heading into August, Gimcheon lead the table with 40 points, yet there is only four points separating them from fourth, showing that the race from promotion is not letting up as we enter the latter half of the season.

AFC Champions League 2021 Interviews

"We have to show that we are actually champion." - Ulsan Hyundai's Dave Bulthuis on Ulsan Hyundai's ACL Chances

"We have to show that we are actually champion. That's what I say. I will not say the pool is weak, but I mean, we played against stronger opponents. And that's also the dangerous part because maybe when you play against less strong opponents, maybe you think that you're gonna win game on like 80%. But we have to remember this is the Asian Champions League and we have to show that our qualities are the best and all eyes are on us now this tournament and show that this was not a one time thing for us to win the Champions League, we have to show them again that we want to go to the next next rounds."

"It was a memorable tournament as a player.": Jeonbuk's Kim Bo-kyung on winning the ACL in 2016

"In a way, I felt it was more difficult than winning the league because it was a tournament and the travel time and distance were very long. Despite the fact we had good players and played in a good condition in every game, there were many difficult matches. In ACL competitions, the will to win is very important, and in a way, a little luck is needed. In this regard, we seemed to have won the 2016 Asian Champions League because we were well prepared and everything came together nicely in our favour. It was a memorable tournament as a player. "

"We learned during the preparation process that our opponent in the final was a good team, so we spent more time and effort preparing than we would do with other games and prepared in a strong state of mind. The most memorable moment was when the players were holding out for the last 1-2 minutes before the final whistle, and when that whistle blew, the players jumped onto the pitch and celebrated the victory. This memory is like a good memory that comes to my mind every time I think of an ACL competition or go to a tournament."

Doneil Henry at Gold Cup

Suwon Samsung Bluewings defender Doneil Henry has been representing his nation Canada at the Concacaf Gold Cup, helping guide his side to the semifinals before ultimately being defeated by Mexico. The centre-back featured four times for Canada, including the full 90 minutes in the semifinal, where the match was heading for extra time until a winner from Mexico's Hector Herrera in the ninth minute of time added on cruelly denied Canada their first final appearance since 2000. Henry will now return to Korea and meet up with his Suwon teammates as they look to continue their title challenge in the latter half of the season.

K League Olympians

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics saw a number of K League players called up to represent the Republic of Korea at the competition as Kim Hak-bum's side went in search of a medal. In total, 20 of Korea's 22 man squad were comprised of up and coming K League talent with the likes of Ulsan Hyundai's Lee Dong-gyeong grabbing the attention of fans with some superbly taken goals from range. Unfortunately for Korea, they came unstuck at the hands of an impressive Mexico side in the quarterfinal stages meaning that many of these players will be reuniting with their K League clubs sooner than they would have liked but with several of their reputations enhanced by their performances and with bright futures still ahead of them.
