2021 K League 1 Round 30 Preview

league 2021.09.16   I   조회수 1163

The 2021 Hana 1Q K League 1 campaign is well and truly at the business end of things as we head into Round 30 this weekend. Five huge matches are due to take place over the course of the weekend, including Daegu FC hosting league leaders Ulsan Hyundai, Jeju United away to Gwangju FC looking to keep their push for the top half on track, and an in-form Cho Young-wook and FC Seoul taking on high-flying Suwon FC in search of a crucial win in the capita club's bid to avoid the drop.

Match of the Round

Daegu FC (4th) vs Ulsan Hyundai (1st) - Sat. 18th Sept. 19:00

An alternative Match of the Round would be Daegu FC versus Ulsan Hyundai this Saturday evening. Ulsan on Tuesday booked their place in the AFC Champions League quarter-finals but did so after going 120 minutes plus a penalty shootout with Kawasaki Frontale. Last year's ACL MVP Yoon Bit-garam fired in the decisive spot kick after goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo had produced shootout heroics. Daegu, on the other hand, suffered ACL heartbreak and were knocked out by Nagoya Grampus following a 4-2 loss in Japan. The Sky Blues then will be keen to put the midweek setback behind them and return to winning ways at DGB Daegu Bank Park this weekend. Lee Byung-keun's men have had an extra day's rest compared to Ulsan and so will be the fresher of the two teams.

Ulsan remain top of K League 1 by four points after the 0-0 draw with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors on 10th September. Title rivals Jeonbuk's match with Suwon Bluewings kicks off at 14:20 KST and so by the time the Sky Blues and the Horangi take to the field, the pressure could be on to maintain the four-point gap. Meanwhile, a win for Daegu might be enough to move them up to third. Saturday's encounter will be the third between the two sides this season having both picked up 2-1 victories in the previous two meetings. The most recent came at the Munsu in August where Lee Dong-jun found a 78th minute winner after Jeong Tae-wook on 45 minutes had cancelled out Lukas Hinterseer's penalty two minutes shy of half time. Daegu have won just one of their last ten meetings with Ulsan who have four victories and five draws.

Team of the Round

Jeju United (vs. Gwangju FC, Sat. 18th Sept. 16:30)

Jeju United sit eighth in K League 1 but, after back-to-back wins, the Islanders are back in the hunt for a place in the top half of the table. Last time out Jeju picked up a dramatic late win with club captain Lee Chang-min firing in a 95th minute winner away to Incheon United. The win, coupled with the three points picked up in the round prior - a 1-0 home victory over FC Seoul thanks to another Lee Chang-min strike - Nam Ki-il's men sit just two points behind Suwon Bluewings who occupy sixth place. Jeju had gone 12 matches without a win from April through to August but the 2020 K League 2 champions are now on a run of one loss in five with three victories. This Saturday, Jeju United fly to the mainland to take on Gwangju FC, the team directly below them in the table but separated by five points. The first two meetings between the two teams this season, the first in four years, ended as stalemates. A similar result this weekend might not be enough if United are to secure a place in the top six.

Player of the Round

Cho Young-wook (FC Seoul vs. Suwon FC, Sun. 19th Sept. 16:30)

FC Seoul young forward Cho Young-wook has already equalled his best ever goal return for a season of three but the opener away to Seongnam FC was Cho's third in four matches. All three have been different types of goals too, showing the range which the Korean U23 international possesses. For his first of the season against Ulsan, Cho showed good movement to find space before being composed enough to hit a Kim Jin-ya cutback first time into the top corner from 12 yards out, his second was a header against Jeonbuk and the third was a left-footed drive into the top corner following a fizzed in pass from the left flank. The challenge for Cho now is to score a goal in an FC Seoul win, something which he hasn't been able to do since October 2020 - the winner in a 1-0 victory over Seongnam. Cho and Seoul take on Suwon FC this Sunday in a game which would see the capital club move off the foot of the table with a win.
