On Saturday second in the league, Jeonbuk Hyundai face sixth place Suwon Samsung Bluewings for the third time this year to begin Round 30 of the 2021 Hana 1Q K League 1 season. The hosts need three points to keep pace with Ulsan Hyundai while Suwon will try to get an important win in their battle for a place in the top half of the table.

Recent Form

Jeonbuk Hyundai head into this weekend’s game versus Suwon Samsung Bluewings after a goalless draw against Ulsan Hyundai last weekend and a mid-week win on penalties in the AFC Champions League Round of 16 against BG Pathum United from Thailand. Before their top of the table clash with Ulsan, the Green Warriors lost only once in eight games. Despite being exhausted from the mid-week match Jeonbuk need to get a victory as they are still second behind Ulsan Hyundai by four points.

Suwon Samsung Bluewings had an outstanding start to this season, improving vastly from the last year. However lately, they have been out of form as they are still waiting for the first win since the end of May. In this period Suwon lost six and drew three games in the K League 1 and got eliminated from the the FA Cup in the quarterfinals. On Saturday they need to get points to fight for the top half of the table as they are at a sixth place, level on 36 points with Incheon United who played one game fewer.

Team News

Kim Sang-sik will have to face some problems as Modou Barrow and Choi Young-jun are unlikely to feature this weekend due to their injuries. Luckily for Jeonbuk, no players are suspended but the Green Warriors have played two exhausting matches in the last seven days. Last weekend’s clash against Ulsan Hyundai and mid-week AFC Champions League game which went to extra time and penalties mean that Kim Sang-sik is likely to make some changes in the starting lineup.

Suwon Samsung Bluewings’s head coach Park Kun-ha is unlikely to have midfielder Choi Sung-geun available due to his knee injury. Striker Kim Gun-hee has been to see a hernia specialist in Germany and is expected to make a return some time in mid-to-late September. Kwon Chang-hoon is also a major doubt with a calf problem picked up on international duty. Moreover, young winger Jung Sang-bin got the fifth yellow card this season last week against Gwangju FC, so he will be suspended on Saturday against Jeonbuk.

Head-to-Head

The historical record between Jeonbuk Hyundai and Suwon Samsung Bluewings is in Saturday hosts’ favour as they have won 32 games, drew 31 games, and lost only on 23 occasions. The Green Warriors are also ahead in all-time goals scored by 136 to 114 goals. In the previous 10 outings, Jeonbuk lost to Suwon only twice. One of those two games was this season as in May when Suwon Samsung Bluewings won 3-1 to get revenge from a 3-1 defeat to Jeonbuk earlier this season.

What to Watch

Jeonbuk's attacking prowess vs. Suwon's defensive soundness

Jeonbuk Hyundai is the top goal-scoring team in the league with 50 goals in 28 outings. Nearly half of them were scored by Jeonbuk’s strikers Stanislav Iljutcenko and Gustavo who found the way to the opponents' net 12 and 11 times respectively. Having the likes of the league’s best assist provider Kim Bo-kyung, the incredibly dangerous Han Kyo-won and Moon Seon-min behind them means that opponent’s defenders cannot lose concentration even for a second. Despite that Jeonbuk Hyundai had games where they were unable to score, so being exhausted from the mid-week game this aspect of their play will be very interesting to watch. Since the summer break, Suwon Samsung Bluewings have conceded 15 goals in eight matches - the most in K League 1 during that time. Last week Canada international Doneil Henry wasn’t available after the international break but the Bluewings faithful will be hoping their team can keep out the league's leading scorers. How the Suwon players react to last week's draw with Gwangju will be worth keeping an eye on.
