league 2021.09.24   I   조회수 1410

The third Super Match of the 2021 Hana 1Q K League 1 season sees Suwon Samsung Bluewings host FC Seoul at Big Bird this Sunday. The Bluewings are chasing a place in the top half and a possible ACL finish whereas FC Seoul are seeking survival in a hotly contested relegation battle.

Recent Form

Suwon Samsung Bluewings picked up a first win in nine last time out, a 3-2 home victory over Gangwon FC. Youngster Jung Sang-bin gave the Bluewings the lead on 37 minutes, before Ko Mu-yeol levelled from the spot on 45. The first half wasn't finished there though as Lee Ki-je restored Suwon's lead with a stunning free-kick deep into time added on. Cho Jae-wan levelled seven minutes after the restart but an own goal from Kim Young-bin gave Park Kun-ha's side their first win since May. Prior to Tuesday, Suwon had lost eight of their last 11 matches.

FC Seoul, meanwhile, are three unbeaten with two wins and a draw and have moved up to 10th in the table. Last time out, Seoul drew 0-0 at home with Incheon United but thought they had done enough to earn a first-half lead when Ki Sung-yueng drilled the ball into the bottom corner from long range. However, referee Kim Dong-jin deemed Park Chu-young to be in an offside position in the build-up and the goal was chalked off. Prior to Wednesday's stalemate with Incheon, Seoul picked up a 2-1 win over Suwon FC for what was the capital club's first victory since August 8th and eight matches.

Team News

FC Seoul forwards Ji Dong-won and Jung Han-min returned to training in the build-up to the pre-Chuseok fixtures and could be involved but Connor Chapman, Kim Jin-ya, Ko Kwang-min and Hwang Hyun-soo remain doubts.

For Suwon, Kim Gun-hee is due a return after overcoming a hernia problem. The Bluewings' leading scored has returned from Germany where he went to see a sports hernia specialist. Doneil Henry is out after picking up a fifth booking of the season last time out. Jung Sang-bin has served his one-match ban for accumulating five yellow cards and was on the scoresheet last time out.

Head-to-Head

Sunday's clash will be the 95th K League Super Match. FC Seoul have a slight advantage with 36 wins to Suwon's 34 and 24 draws. Goal-wise Suwon have scored 127 to Seoul's 116. Over the last 10 encounters, Seoul have six wins to Suwon's two and two draws. In terms of goals, Seoul lead 19-17.

After going 18 K League Super Match meetings without victory over their rivals, Suwon Bluewings have managed to pick up wins in each of the last two seasons over FC Seoul. Earlier this campaign Park Kun-ha's men ran out 3-0 winners thanks to goals from Kim Gun-hee, Kim Min-woo, and Min Sang-gi. Last term Suwon earned a 3-1 win thanks to an Adam Taggart hat-trick.

What to Watch

Two teams that have turned the corner

For very different reasons, both Suwon Bluewings and FC Seoul are in need of points. Both, though, appear to have turned the corner after difficult spells. Sunday's hosts Suwon Bluewings picked up a first win in 12 last time out and since the end of May, while FC Seoul are unbeaten in three following a sticky spell of their own. With just three games left until Final Round, both teams will be looking to pick up the three points. For Suwon a victory would go a long way towards the target of finishing in the top half of the table and, potentially, in an AFC Champions League place. For FC Seoul it'd be about survival and the capital club's fight to avoid the drop.

Also worth noting is Suwon's record against FC Seoul over the last five or six years. Last season, Suwon were able to buck the trend of FC Seoul having the last laugh when the two sides met. Seoul had previously gone 18 K League matches unbeaten over the Bluewings with 10 wins and eight draws. But, an Adam Taggart hat-trick on 26th September 2020 ended the run before a 3-0 Bluewings victory at Sangam earlier this season. Have Park Kun-ha's men been able to turn the corner in the Super Match too?

The Super Match itself, meanwhile, often produces goals The last goal-less Super Match was 11 meetings ago and only on two occasions since the 2016 FA Cup Final has this fixture ended without either team scoring. Since then, the average number of goals scored has been 2.9 per match. The two teams will be looking to kick on after positive results over the Chuseok period.
